Join us Sunday, May 19th, at 1PM as we welcome local author Cathy Payne with her new book, Saving the Guinea Hogs.
Cathy will present a short overview on heritage breeds and a book reading followed by Q&A, then sign a few books! Refreshments will be served. Books can be purchased prior to the event.
Cathy is a retired elementary special education teacher and former reading specialist who now writes and educates about heritage breeds. She is a UGA graduate three times around, previously taught in 3 Athens elementary schools, and recently moved back to Athens after eight years of homesteading in Elbert County. This book is the product of a six-year research project that involved nearly fifty interviews and a review of archival data from 1990 to 2018. Cathy's book is full of information presented in a very accessible and informal style. It includes colorful first-person interviews that capture the southern heritage and personalities of farmers born as long ago as 1934, taking the reader back to an earlier time. Cathy takes what she has learned from her contacts with breeders and focuses on strategies to preserve this breed and its distinct family bloodlines. These homestead hogs are survivors worth preserving for future generations!
