Stitch and B*tch Knit/Crochet Circle

Join us at Normal Books for our knit/crochet circle! All skill levels welcome. Come hang out, knit, crochet, or just socialize and snack!

Bring your own materials, and materials to share if you like. You can work on whatever you want, but we'll also have some instruction/patterns available, and a demonstration or two, if you're brand new to stitching!

If you're a seasoned knitter or crocheter who'd like to share your wisdom (or hoard of yarn), feel free! We want everyone to be as involved as they like.

Please bring snacks and drinks (alcohol ok if you're 21+) for yourself and/or to share!

We'll have a few crochet hooks that folks can borrow, but if you want to be able to keep working on a project post-meeting, pick up a hook or set of knitting needles of your own! We recommend Revival Yarns, but big box stores, craft shops, and the interwebs have them for cheap, too.

RSVP to the Facebook event here.

Local Author Cathy Payne: Saving the Guinea Hogs

Join us Sunday, May 19th, at 1PM as we welcome local author Cathy Payne with her new book, Saving the Guinea Hogs.

Cathy will present a short overview on heritage breeds and a book reading followed by Q&A, then sign a few books! Refreshments will be served. Books can be purchased prior to the event.

Cathy is a retired elementary special education teacher and former reading specialist who now writes and educates about heritage breeds. She is a UGA graduate three times around, previously taught in 3 Athens elementary schools, and recently moved back to Athens after eight years of homesteading in Elbert County. This book is the product of a six-year research project that involved nearly fifty interviews and a review of archival data from 1990 to 2018. Cathy's book is full of information presented in a very accessible and informal style. It includes colorful first-person interviews that capture the southern heritage and personalities of farmers born as long ago as 1934, taking the reader back to an earlier time. Cathy takes what she has learned from her contacts with breeders and focuses on strategies to preserve this breed and its distinct family bloodlines. These homestead hogs are survivors worth preserving for future generations!

Local Author Claire Dunphy: Becoming Earthwoman

Join us Wed, April 24th, at 6PM as we welcome local author Claire L. Dunphy with her new book, Becoming Earthwoman: Thank You Notes from a Grateful Guest!

Claire will do a short reading and then sign books and answer questions. Be sure to come by for this excellent book straight out of the Athens community!

New York artist and performer Claire L. Dunphy has seen the web that connects us all together, the web that exists under, above and through us all. The Harmonic Convergence lit a fire inside her that led to her traversing the countryside in Vanita von Van, often with her trusty four-legged sidekick, Magnum, in tow, painting and arranging rock circles. Claire's journey from New Yorker to Earthwoman was not always easy. She encountered bigotry, reflexive opposition to her love of the planet and its inhabitants, and met some who couldn't see what Claire saw -- The beauty and wonder that is life on this planet. But, Claire also met many human spirit guides who pointed her in the right direction, attended Lakota ceremonies and gatherings, and spread her circular, animated love around the American West and then to the larger world.

Becoming Earthwoman is one woman's trek to the sublime. Anyone can take this journey. It's not always easy, but if you follow in Claire Dunphy's footsteps, you will change yourself and, thus, change the world.
